My name is Jill Silberstein and I am a DONA certified birth doula, certified lactation counselor, certified associate polarity practitioner, and dabbler in herbal medicine. I grew up in Rockville, Maryland, graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a degree in Art History and traveled around the world on a study abroad program called Semester at Sea. I now live in sunny Los Angeles after a brief stint in Nashville, Tennessee and thirteen years in New York City.
Since I was a little girl, I was drawn to birth and the mystery of pregnant women. I remember playing baby doctor and meticulously displaying my pretend instruments (neon pink and green hair clips) next to my friend-turned-patient who was instructed to lie on the floor with a pillow stuffed in her flannel shirt.
Years passed and I didn’t just grow out of my fascination with birth and pregnancy. It was channeled into anatomy, biology, and women’s studies classes in college. I continued attending lectures, courses, and workshops in New York while I gained experience in the television commercial production and post-production side of the advertising industry. (Check out jillsilberstein.com for more info on my advertising work.)
While working in advertising, I attended an assistant midwifery workshop at The Farm with Ina May Gaskin and the farm midwives. Even then, becoming a doula was more than a fantasy and not quite a career but I decided to sign up for the doula training anyway when I got home. I continued onto certification by volunteering at the Inwood House in the Bronx by assisting homeless pregnant teens throughout their journey.
It was then that I officially became a birth junkie and joined Carriage House Birth in Brooklyn. I juggled my career as a producer with my career as a doula and attended as many births, conferences, and trainings as possible. I attended the 2011 DONA conference, the 2012 Midwifery Today conference, and the Birthing From Within Mentor workshop in April 2012 as well as coordinating the Improving Birth Rally that year in NYC. In 2014, I graduated from a three year Herbal Medicine Apprenticeship with Robin Rose Bennett. In 2015, I became a certified lactation counselor and attended a training on Gena Kirby’s Rebozo techniques. Click here for a full list of all of my trainings.
In my last few years in NYC, I became interested in polarity therapy, which is a highly effective yet subtle way to clear energetic pathways. I began taking trainings and workshops to become a practitioner and finally attained certification. I now offer sessions in and around Los Angeles.
And last but certainly not least, I attend and lead women’s circles, and moon gatherings as often as I can.
Here Lil’ Birdie is in wings-up mode in Los Angeles as I get acclimated to this beautiful city.
